Rough Night for Me, Dog

Coming into tonight, there were only a few contestants I really remembered from the audition and Hollywood Rounds.  And of course, I was anxious to see what Norman Gentle would do.  I expected Matt Giraud to do very well and thought Adam Lambert would pull something out.  There seems to be some tight competition amongst the guys this year.  On the other hand, I was still waiting for a girl to come out and really shock us with something brilliant.

At the end of the day, I’m a little disappointed as an Idol fan.  I know it is against the rules for anyone from the show to help with song selection, but tonight I wish they had.  The song choices were terrible for the most part.  It’s sad really because I know there is some real talent in this group.

My first comment is about Norman Gentle.  Yes, he is entertaining.  But his performance of “And I Am Telling You” was more interesting the first AND second time we saw it.  Can he not do “Norman Gentle” on another song?  My wife loves him though.  And so does America.

My second is about Adam Lambert.  This dude has a sick range.  However, it still seems a bit theatrical to me.  But he’s good.  He was one of the only redeeming factors about tonight’s show.

Predictions for tonight are difficult for me because it was not a very good night for anyone.  My guesses would be Adam Lambert, Mishavonna Henson and Allison Iraheta.  The field is wide open for some surprises.  Nick Mitchell could offer an upset and I would actually like to see more from Matt Giraud.

What do you think?  I’d like to hear your thoughts on tonight’s show.

I agree, Phil, I was a little disappointed in the singing tonight. I really liked Matt Giraud in Hollywood and hope he makes it into the top 12. I think he just picked the wrong song tonight and hope he gets another chance. I think Adam and Allison will make it although I think Adam overperformed his song tonight. I liked Megan a little more than Mishavonna. Norman is on the wrong show. I can’t figure out what kind of record he would make????

My middle son and I were disappointed, too, Phil, with the song choices. We both feel that so many good ones will be cut. The format this year does not help, either. I thought Adam was incredible, and so was Allison. I was thinking that Kai had a great voice, and I hope that he gets voted through.

    Phil,
What is so annoying about the contestants is that, when told that they’ve picked the wrong song, they disagree! And their reason being: “I love the song”. What does THAT have got to do with ANYTHING?! I love so many songs, but even I (who’s not a singer by any chance) know which song to NEVER ever sing in public!

What is even more frustrating (like what Simon and the other judges have been saying) is that when the contestants ESPECIALLY at THIS POINT of the competition pick bad song choices, it not only takes away the entertainment factor we love American Idol for, but also completely shows the stupidity of the singer!

Why want to be a singer, if one doesn’t even know what songs are suitable for oneself?

I was also surprised by Kris because he didn’t really stand out last night but he does have a good voice. Not surprised at all by Allison and Adam. I hope Matt gets a wildcard and maybe Mishavonna. Looking forward to next week’s group. Thanks for the blog, Phil.
